In 1826, Altadena was established in the northernmost portion of Rancho San Pascual by the Mexican Government after they claimed independence from Spain. Shortly after, in 1848, California was annexed in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and became a state in 1850. By 1874, Rancho San Pascual was settled by the Indiana Colony and incorporated as Pasadena in 1886. Pasadena is a Chippewa name derived from a translation for "Crown of the Valley".
