Altadena is located in Los Angeles County, California, approximately 14 miles from the downtown Los Angeles Civic Center. Altadena had a population was 42,610 at the 2000 census. Altadena’s name is derived from the Spanish term “alta”, which means “upper” and “dena” from nearby Pasadena. Altadena’s name literally means “upper Pasadena” due to its location on a slightly higher elevation than Pasadena. The San Gabriel Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop for one of San Gabriel Valley’s oldest and most beautiful communities. In 1826, Altadena was established in the northernmost portion of Rancho San Pascual by the Mexican Government after they claimed independence from Spain. Shortly after, in 1848, California was annexed in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and became a state in 1850. By 1874, Rancho San Pascual was settled by the Indiana Colony and incorporated as Pasadena in 1886. Pasadena is a Chippewa name derived from a translation for "Crown of the Valley". The highland areas, such as Altadena, remained undeveloped areas of the Los Angeles County
